Creating CSN

Complicated legal constraints were obstacles when Graham decided to form a band with Stephen Stills and David Crosby. Graham was signed to Columbia Records, Stephen with Atlantic, and only “the Croz” (as they both refer to Crosby) was contractually free, as he had recently left the Byrds. Graham explained at the time to the press, “We hope to start a trio together to emphasize our individuality.”

One year later, their eponymous album, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, reached Number 6 on Billboard’s Top 100 albums, with two Top 40 hit singles, “Marrakesh Express,” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” the latter a romantic homage by Stills to his folksinger girlfriend at the time, Judy Collins.

According to Graham, the Hollies were thrown a party in Los Angeles in late 1966. A young fan invited Graham to meet his friends at a nearby recording studio. The friends were the Mamas and the Papas.

“So I was interested in meeting them,” he told the Hudson Union Society in 2012. “When I got there Michelle, John Phillips, and Denny Doherty were recording tracks. So I talked with Cass Elliott.” (By the way, Baltimore native Cass Elliott played the old Shadows club in DC with Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky as the Mugwumps. More about Cass in Chapter 15.)

Cass knew about the Hollies and everything else in the music scene. She introduced Graham to her friend David Crosby, who had just quit the Byrds, and they got along really well.

So well that when Graham moved to California, David Crosby gave him a an eighty-thousand-dollar check just to keep him solid. Adjusted for inflation, that’s $1,190,000 in 2015 dollars. Indeed, “Croz” is a good friend to Graham.
